Frequently asked questions
The things people ask us before the first workflow review — answered plainly. Don't see yours? Ask us directly.
Getting started
What do I need to get started?
A holdings file. Upload positions and tax lots as a CSV — including cost basis and acquisition dates — or enter them directly. No custodian integration, no API keys, no IT project. Most people run their first rebalance the day they sign up.
Who is Rebalance Engine for?
Anyone managing a taxable (non-qualified) portfolio who feels the cost of rebalancing by hand: RIAs and portfolio managers running hundreds of client accounts, CPAs and CFPs advising on the tax side, and individual investors managing their own brokerage accounts. The tax frictions are the same either way — realized gains, wash-sale windows, spreadsheet lot-picking, and keeping a record of why each trade was made.
Does it place trades for me?
No. Rebalance Engine produces the optimized trade list and the analytics behind it. You review, approve, and execute through your own broker or custodian. The engine never touches an account and never moves money.
How the engine thinks
What does “tax-aware” actually mean here?
Every candidate sell is scored against multiple factors at the lot level: how far the position has drifted, the tax impact of realizing that specific lot's gain or loss, and wash-sale risk. The engine then orders sells to hit your targets at the lowest tax cost — respecting your constraints, not overriding them.
How does wash-sale protection work?
The engine tracks the 30-day wash-sale window on a date-aware basis and checks proposed trades against it — including related sibling positions — before the trade list is produced. At-risk repurchases are flagged up front, so a harvested loss isn't silently disallowed after the fact.
Can I cap the taxes a rebalance is allowed to realize?
Yes. You set a tax budget per rebalance, and the engine treats it as a hard ceiling — it will leave drift uncorrected rather than blow through your budget, and it will show you exactly what it left on the table and why.
Does the engine harvest losses?
Yes. Where losses are available and harvesting them doesn't violate your restrictions or the wash-sale window, the engine realizes them to offset gains — while keeping the allocation on target, including substituting into appropriate alternates where configured.
Is the output auditable?
Yes — that's a design goal, not an afterthought. Every run exports trade lists, before/after allocation reports, and drift analysis as CSV/XLSX files, with the reasoning behind each lot choice. The file your CPA or compliance team asks for is the file you already have.
Security & data
How is my data handled?
Access is gated by Cloudflare Access zero-trust authentication. Each user works in an isolated workspace, and data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Details are on our security page, and data practices are described in the privacy policy.
Do you sell or share my data?
No. Portfolio data is used to run your rebalances — nothing else. We do not sell, rent, or share it with third parties for their own purposes.
Pricing & engagement
What does it cost?
Pricing depends on the size of your portfolio or practice and your workflow. The fastest way to a number is a workflow review — bring a real holdings file, see the engine work on real data, and we'll scope pricing from there.
Is Rebalance Engine giving tax advice?
No. The engine computes tax-aware trade recommendations from the data and constraints you provide; it is a tool, not a tax adviser. Tax decisions remain with you and, where appropriate, your tax professional.
